artist statement
Emilie uses medium and large format film to create photographs shaped by the aesthetics of Pictorialism, the philosophy of Transcendentalism, and the imaginative reach of Surrealism. Her work emphasizes soft focus, intentional composition, and emotional depth found in quiet, natural moments. By working with historical processes, she embraces slowness and presence over digital immediacy.
Hands often appear in her images as a symbol of connection, creation, and touch. They emphasize the intimate relationship between humanity and nature while also inviting viewers to insert themselves into the scene, creating a personal and tactile connection to the work.
Through this meditative approach, Emilie explores the spiritual connection between humanity and nature while also drawing on the Surrealist pursuit of inner truth, dreamlike imagery, and the unconscious. Her photographs invite reflection, blurring the line between reality, memory, and the imagined to reveal the transcendent within the everyday.
